Books.

cadences:

So I’m sitting here at work and it is just completely miserable outside in Chicago today, but I’m listening to the new Lightning Bolt album and I’m in a really good mood. I want to kick this new site off by talking about something I’ve been working on for the past nine months. It’s a book about interaction design, and yesterday I settled, for final serious this-will-not-change-ever real, on a title. And here’s what it is: Cadence & Slang. Here’s when it’s coming out: sometime in the middle six months of 2010.

My friend, colleague, and beer aficionado, nickd, is writing a book. I’ve been privileged to read his initial screed, and seen some early drafts of the book, and it looks to be quite worthwhile. Here’s why: when nickd cares about something, he will research that thing ad nauseam. This is why he’s a beer aficionado. I will almost blindly trust him with any recommendation he makes, and he’s seldom led me astray — much to my taste buds’ enjoyment and wallet’s dismay. With interaction design, he’s doing the same and this time, channeling those efforts into the printed word. He’s engaging in pretty rigorous academic research but is intensely passionate about what’s happening today and what may happen tomorrow.

I’m looking forward to supporting his effort, and I hope you will too. While this is a field of study I’m quite interested and involved in, if I can’t understand a person’s passion, I can sincerely appreciate that they have one.
